Keep it Cool at All Times

It is possible to get sick from improperly stored lamb meat, or any meat for that matter. This is just another good reason why it is crucial to understand the guidelines for properly storing lamb. Of course, most people know not to leave raw meat sitting out in heat, or even at room temperature; but there are more facts to learn when it comes to proper lamb meat storage.

As soon as you purchase your lamb meat, it is important to get it home as soon as possible before it can begin to dwindle in quality. If it’s a hot day and you have several errands to run, be sure to put grocery shopping last so that you can return them to a cooler environment, quickly. Now at this point, the question is whether to freeze or refrigerate lamb meat.

Freezing and Refrigeration

It is entirely up to you whether to freeze or refrigerate your lamb meat since it is suitable for both storing options. If you plan to consume your lamb meat within 2 to 3 days, it is wise to leave it in the refrigerator. In the refrigerator, be sure temperatures remain around 34 and 35 degrees Fahrenheit. For added freshness, try to choose a spot that is the cooler than the other areas of the fridge and always put your meat on a plate to prevent leaks.

If you do not have plans for your lamb meat just yet, it is better to freeze it so that it doesn’t spoil. Freezer temperatures should be 0 degrees Fahrenheit so that lamb can be stored for up to 8 months. Ground lamb should not be frozen longer than 4 months for ultimate flavor and freshness. You can keep it in its original packaging, but it is a good idea to wrap it in foil and place it in a freezer bag too.

If you have lamb meat leftovers, plan to store them in the refrigerator if they were previously prepared from a frozen state. Refrigerated leftovers should be consumed or tossed within 3 days for flavor and safety. If you never froze the meat, after cooking it you can choose to place it in a freezer-approved container and enjoy it again a few months down the road. It is really helpful to label freezer and refrigerator containers so that you are sure of its expiration date.
